Neurofeedback

WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK?

Neurofeedback is a way of training the brain to encourage certain patterns of electrical activity. Electrodes are placed on the scalp and the brain’s electrical activity is recorded and converted into a video display on a screen (which has the appearance of a video game or movie). When certain frequencies of brain activity increase, the brain is rewarded by the image on the screen. This trains the brain to produce more of those desirable patterns. Neurofeedback does not administer anything to the brain. The only “input” the brain gets is through watching the images on the screen, and these images are determined by the brain’s electrical activity.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Your brain is made up of nerve cells firing electrical signals in 4 distinct types of brainwave patterns: beta, alpha, theta, and delta. These patterns control your thinking, emotions, moods, and all that you do. Neurofeedback technology guides you into different mind states using brainwave stimulation. Because most people spend the majority of their time in the beta state, neurofeedback excludes the beta frequencies and only trains alpha, theta, and delta frequencies.

Beta (13-40Hz)

  • The predominant frequency when awake and alert
  • They bring active awareness directed to the outside world
  • Present during stress, paranoia, anger, fear, anxiety, and bipolar disorder
  • Beta waves are associated with excessive thinking activity and self-destructive impulses
  • Beta waves make up most of our conscious mind

Alpha (7-13Hz)

  • The alpha state is where meditation and relaxation begins
  • Alpha waves are induced when focused, yet deeply relaxed
  • Professional athletes produce alpha brainwaves prior to highly concentrated activities. On the other hand, less experienced athletes produce more anxious beta waves
  • In the alpha state, fears, phobias, and habits melt away
  • Alpha waves allow for a deeper level of learning, processing and understanding information fast and effectively

Theta (4-7Hz)

  • Theta waves gain prominence in deeper levels of meditation and relaxation
  • Here, brain activity winds down to the threshold of the sleep stage
  • Theta waves heighten problem solving skills
  • Associated with lucid dreaming
  • Children have high levels of theta waves, which shows in their ability to learn
  • Theta waves are briefly experienced when coming out of delta waves, when waking or falling asleep

Delta (0-4Hz)

  • The deepest level of meditation
  • Delta waves are associated with dreamless, calm, sleep
  • Crucial for renewal, healing, and rejuvenation
  • They are linked to our unconscious mind

Neurofeedback can improve the condition of many symptoms including:

Headache

Anxiety

Stress (including PTSD)

Temper management

Hyperactivity

Impulsivity

Addiction

Sleep disturbance

Depression

Aggressive behaviors

Seizure

WHAT DOES THE AVERAGE TREATMENT LOOK LIKE?

During a neurofeedback session, electrodes are placed on the scalp. The patient will be asked to be seated in a chair and view a computer monitor. Certain settings are adjusted at each neurofeedback session, including the brain wave frequency that is being targeted and the locations on the scalp where the electrodes are placed (which allows targeting of different regions of the brain). Selection of these settings depends on the individual’s symptoms and how these change during the course of treatment. It sometimes takes several sessions in order to determine the optimal frequency and electrode placement.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

A general course of 10 treatments is recommended.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?

In general, most patients will experience little to no side effecst from neurofeedback. As the only input the patient recieves is visual through the computer, there is not much to go wrong. However some patients may find temporary feelings of panic or anxiousness during the treatment. Sometimes patients may feel very tired out or have trouble focusing. Often times these feelings go away shortly after the treatment ends.

IS IT COVERED BY MY HEALTH INSURANCE?

Yes and No, in most cases it is partially covered. When you come in for a treatment, your general health and any symptoms that are present is the primary treatment. Many patients have allergies, headaches, TMJ, insomnia, digestive issues, stress, emotional issues, pain, menopause symptoms to name a few.
